IT’S OFFICIAL — YOU ARE A BOILERMAKER!!!
Over these next four years, you will truly bleed gold and black (well not literally, but you get the point)!
If you are anything like me, becoming a Boilermaker is a dream come true. To this day it is one of my greatest accomplishments. Just accept the fact that you are a big deal. Getting into Purdue is not only something you should be extremely proud of, but also something you should be extremely excited for!
CONGRATS and WELCOME to the best university in the world (I may be just a little biased).
So, where does your journey as a Purdue student begin?
Here at STAR!
STAR is Purdue’s version of student orientation, and, in my eyes, basically the green light to your college career. As amazing and exciting as STAR is, it can also be equally overwhelming and challenging. Here are a couple tips and tricks to make to your STAR day and transition to Purdue as seamless and successful as possible.
My first tip for every incoming STAR student is to be prepared.
Remember the forms and random little odds-and-ends your mom or dad has been telling you to finish up for the last couple weeks? Welllllll … if you get them done, I promise it really will make your STAR day a much smoother process and give you less to worry about come move-in time in August. Do not forget to upload your picture for your student ID, complete your Student Information Form, and finish your Online Immunization Form before your scheduled STAR day. All of this will help get the ball rolling for your time at Purdue!
My second tip is the easiest and probably most important one — make some friends.
I know it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of your STAR day, but it is honestly a great opportunity to make some of your first Purdue friends. Take a break from your Instagram feed or Snapchat to engage with everyone around you! Remember, you are not in this alone. Everyone is at STAR for the same reason — to prepare for his or her start at Purdue. Do not be afraid to spark up conversation with people and be yourself. You may have more in common with the person next to you than you would think.
My next tip is to get involved.
Does having the VIP student experience, getting connected with thousands of Purdue alumni, and being a part of Purdue’s largest student organization sound like something you would be interested in?
I know my answer was definitely YES! That is why I became a part of Purdue Alumni Student Experience (PASE). PASE’s main focus is connecting people. Whether it is connecting students to other students or students to alumni, PASE opens the door to a huge network of people and resources, and you can choose from countless networking and social events. Also, did I mention that you get to enjoy perks like free apparel and discounts on textbooks and food — what more could a student want?!
As if you are not already thinking Sign me up!, then let this deal be the cherry on top. It is normally $99 to become a PASE member for the entirety of your undergrad career. But, if you open an account at Purdue Federal Credit Union when you become a member of PASE, you automatically get $50 deposited into your account!* Let’s just say, as a broke college student, I wish this deal would have been going on when I became
a member! Be sure to talk to both the alumni association (they are the masterminds behind the PASE program) and Purdue Federal Credit Union while you are on campus for STAR, and cash in on everything they both have to offer!
Finally, my last tip for you is to make STAR a family affair.
Your parents will most likely be joining you for your STAR day, and if this is the case, do not forget to include them!
Indiana summers can be crazy hot, and I can promise that you will be tired after a long day of student orientation. But good news — Purdue Federal Credit Union will be outside University Book Store all day offering free Pete Pops to all of their visitors! Be sure to grab your parents, stop by to cool down, and learn more about everything Purdue Federal has going on.
Since you are in that general direction, you might as well head down the hill to a true Purdue staple — Triple XXX restaurant! I mean … I am sure you are all starving at this point anyways! If you are a burger, fry, and soda enthusiast like myself, the menu will not disappoint.
I hope these tips make your STAR day a little less overwhelming and a lot more enjoyable!
Welcome to Purdue, and, as always, BOILER UP!!!!
