2016 is OVER. For a majority, that is a good thing. For myself, not so much. 2016 was supposed to be MY year. I was going to become the best version of myself and conquer the world. NEWS FLASH. It didn’t quite work out like that. I was a little sad to see the year go and felt a little like I had nothing to
show for it.
Now we are a few weeks into 2017 and I’ve decided I’m going to make the best of it (again), who’s with me?
From past experience, I know that if I make a “New Year’s Resolution” I’m just setting myself up for failure. So this year, I’m taking a different approach. Instead of creating a resolution, I am coming up with things
I would like to accomplish in 2017. Let’s call them personal development, school goals, and lifestyle changes.
So, here goes.
IN 2017 I AM GOING TO…
- Be more organized. I tend to think of myself as an organized person, but when it comes to school I’m pretty good at keeping things for one class organized and never stressing about it. However the other classes get left behind and I stress about getting my work done and doing it well. I am going to keep all of my classes in order and attempt to not procrastinate as much.
- Read more. You’re probably thinking “you read text books all semester long, why would you want to read more?” I want to read books that interest me. I’m currently reading Khloe Kardashian’s new book and a book
called Second Life. These books are completely different but satisfy different parts of my brain. Khloe’s book is all about mind, body and soul which is one thing I’ve been focusing on lately. After reading The Girl on the Train I was
on the hunt for a great read. Second Life was on a list of “because you read The
Girl on the Train, you should read…” books and it’s the perfect mystery/thriller for
me. It helps me escape reality for a bit. Sometimes we all need that.
- Focus on what is important to me. When I transferred to Purdue from Ball State, I really wanted to be home with my family. My brother was getting married that summer and his first child was due that fall. And now, here it is a few years later… Being nowhere close to ready for children of my own, I’ve found that being an aunt is the next best thing. But, recently I don’t think I’ve made this a priority like I originally wanted to. So, in 2017 I want to focus more on being there for them (i.e. being the cool aunt) and spending more time with my family.
- Do something for ME. Between May and October I have six weddings that I am either in, attending, or doing hair/makeup for. I’m taking a full class load this spring and summer. I’m working full time while also looking for a second job. This isn’t me complaining, but just acknowledging that I have a lot going on. That’s why I am hoping to do something for myself this year. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a spa day, or even a little vacation. I have to do something for myself. It’s important to take care of yourself when you have so many things that begin to suck away your time and energy. It can be mentally draining… and you need a refill every now and then.
Those are my goals for 2017.
All are very realistic and you won’t catch me being a statistic in the “x% of resolutions are broken by the second week of January” study – not just because these aren’t resolutions, but because I’m holding myself accountable with real, achievable goals.
What about you?
What are you going to do to make the best of 2017? Are you going to ditch the negative from your life, stay off of social media for a few days out of the month, travel to a new destination, or maybe go on an adventure?
Whatever you’re planning to do to make the best of 2017, write it down! And, don’t forget to review it often. Take control of things this year and set a path for yourself that you WANT to be on. You can do it – I believe in you!
Happy New Year!
